It seems that the regression is worse than I thought.

First of all, I was wrong about the cursor: it was not blinking.
I don't know if this changes much, but I thought I should point it out
anyway...

This was actually [Ctrl+Alt+F1] and so forth, as you may have guessed.

The most important thing to notice within this update is that I was
probably wrong about the screenhack that is running when the crash
happens.
It seems that xscreensaver-demo is not able to remember the last
running screenhack after the crash (or, maybe, after the consequent
reboot, I don't know) and it just shows that last enabled screenhack it
can find inside ~/.xscreensaver
This happened to be unicode-screensaver, until I disabled it (in the
hope to work around the bug).
Now I again experienced the crash (on both the boxes! during the same
pause!), with unicode-screensaver disabled: hence it's not
unicode-screensaver that triggers the bug!
After the reboot, inside a newly started X session, running
"xscreensaver-demo" shows rubikblocks, which is now the last
enabled screenhack found inside ~/.xscreensaver

So, in summary, I don't know which screenhack triggers the bug, but
disabling unicode-screensaver does *not* help.
The problem seems to occur every time I leave the boxes alone with the
display locked, or even with just xscreensaver running (without locking
the display).
I raised the severity of this bug report, since experiencing a crash
every time the X session is left alone makes xserver-xorg-video-intel
unusable. Please do not downgrade the severity, so that other users are
warned to not upgrade the package on their (Intel integrated graphics
powered) systems, until this issue is fixed.
