Package: xbase-clients Version: 4.2.0-0pre1v3 Severity: normal When those files get left behind after a transient problem then the following error message will be displayed whenever xauth it run: xauth: error in locking authority file /home/rjc/.Xauthority It does not clarify the problem, or provide any method of solution (something that works the way /var/run/*.pid files work would be good). Even if the error message was changed to the following it would be an improvement: xauth: error in creating lock file for authority file /home/rjc/.Xauthority -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Kernel Version: Linux lyta 2.4.19lsm #1 Wed Sep 25 15:49:15 CEST 2002 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux Versions of the packages xbase-clients depends on: ii cpp 2.95.4-17 The GNU C preprocessor. ii debconf 1.2.7 Debian configuration management system ii libc6 2.2.5-14.3 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone ii libdps1 4.2.0-0pre1v3 Display PostScript (DPS) client library ii libfreetype6 2.1.2-7 FreeType 2 font engine, shared library files ii libncurses5 5.2.20020112a- Shared libraries for terminal handling ii libxaw7 4.2.0-0pre1v3 X Athena widget set library ii xlibmesa3 4.2.0-0pre1v3 XFree86 version of Mesa 3D graphics library ii xlibs 4.2.0-0pre1v3 X Window System client libraries ii xlibmesa3 4.2.0-0pre1v3 XFree86 version of Mesa 3D graphics library ^^^ (Provides virtual package libgl1)

Hi, russell@coker.com.au <russell@coker.com.au> (30/09/2002): > When those files get left behind after a transient problem then the > following error message will be displayed whenever xauth it run: > xauth: error in locking authority file /home/rjc/.Xauthority > Even if the error message was changed to the following it would be an > improvement: > xauth: error in creating lock file for authority file /home/rjc/.Xauthority I'm not sure how that would help. Using strace seems to be what's needed here in both cases. Since it's been tagged wontfix previously, I'm now closing this bug report, no need to keep it open forever. If you disagree, feel free to open a bug upstream (which would be the place for such a bug anyway): http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ KiBi.Attachment: signature.asc
