The applet shows a strange layout "??" in the panel widget. It appeared during the transition to X.org 1.6.
According to the keyboard preferences I have "EEUU Dvorak (default)" (EEUU) and "Poland Dvorak, Polish quotes in the quote keys" (Pol), which is what I already had. Then according to the groups menu in the applet I have EEUU and Pol. However, when I left-click on the applet, or when I use the keyboard binding to switch the layout (Lshift-Rshift in my case), it cycles through EEUU, Pol, and ??.
The ?? layout behaves like a strange deadkeys layout. It seems to be English, but the period key is a deadkey. Apostrophe and other keys which are normally deadkeys, are not in this one.
