I found out from NEWS.Debian about the changes to configuration of input
devices in X.  It all seems fine, except that it took me a while to
figure out exactly how to port over my xorg.conf to HAL (file location,
syntax, restarting hald).  I think a template fdi file would go a long
way towards helping users figure out where to put their options.  For
example, you could install the following as
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/x11-mouse.fdi:

we now have a guide to configure input for X:

I'm closing this bug report accordingly. (Also, HAL is — almost — gone
now.)
