I would suggest trying a kms enabled kernel. If you have problems try
booting with radeon.agpmode=x where x = -1 or 1 or 2 or 4 or 8 on the
kernel command line in grub. -1 disables agp and uses the internal
gart mechanism, which should work but with reduced performance. 1-8
will change the agp mode accordingly.
