When the X server is restarted for the second time (e.g., after
logging out), the system is left in an unusable state. The screen goes
into energy-saving mode and there is no reaction to keyboard
input. However, ICMP pings are still answered.

In one case there still was reaction to keyboard input (but this seems
to be the exception), and I was able to restart the system. The
