Package: xserver-xorg-video-r128
Version: 6.8.0-1
Severity: normal

I just installed as a new:
Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.7 Lenny Official i386 CD Binary 20101127

I have an Dell Inspiron 8000 Laptop with broken screen and I can
only see a small part of it in the lower left corner. That is why I have
an old Epson monitor connected, Model: CC1428N A-Code: A882511 with a
resolution 800x600 or 1024x768.

When I boot without the external monitor attached there is no problem.
I can change character consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F1,F2 ... to Ctrl+Alt+ F7
which shows the graphical mode (gnome) in the internal panel.
(The only problem is that the laptop screen is broken and
I can only see a small part of it in the lower left corner as I explained).

When I boot with external monitor attached I have a problem.
I can see every character consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F1,F2 ... to Ctrl+Alt+F6
only on the external monitor and not at the internal panel. In others
words, the internal panel gets inactive while the external is inactive
in character mode.
(this is not so important to me since I only need to see the external
monitor but I think it should be possible).
The problem:
The large specific problem is that when I press Ctrl+Alt+F7
I can only see the graphics console on the internal panel(broken)
and I can not see it on the external monitor that is what
I need to happen. In others words the internal panel is active
and the external monitor gets inactive in graphics mode.

The question:
How I can see the graphics console (gnome) on the external monitor?

I tried as root to fix the problem:

I configured the xorg.conf file as described in some reportbug.
(I'm not sure but it seems that debian is not reading this file).

Also tried:
	 # xrandr -v
	   cant open display
	 # xhost +
xhost: unable to open display ""
	 # DISPLAY=:0.0
	 # export DISPLAY
	 # xrandr -v
	   No protocol especified
	   cant open display :0.0
	 # xhost +
	   No protocol especified
xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"
	 #

I ask if you can please help me in this way do so by sending me
instructions as I should write in the command line or xorg.conf
because I'm new to the wonderful world of Linux.

Thank you very much.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-r128
Version: 6.8.0-1

Please close  Bug# 611510 xserver-xorg-video-r128: Cant open display External Monitor Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop.
Solution:
Set   xorg.conf   as  follows :
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	option	"Display" "CRT"
EndSection
Explanation:
3.4. Using an external monitor
The ATI Rage driver (and I believe all standard X 4.1.x drivers
should be supporting this interface too, if not now, then soon)
supports the following option:
	Option "Display" "string"
where string is one of the following:
		"FP" - use flat panel
		"CRT" - use external monitor
"Mirror" - use both FP & CRT
"BIOS" - use mode as configured in the bios
		         (i.e.: follow the Fn-F8)
If you want to be able to have your laptop automatically detect
the APR (Adv. Port Replicator) external monitor, then you need
to use "BIOS" for your setting.
You can found it and more about Dell Laptos and Linux here:
