I have tried that option on 2.6.36 and 2.6.32 from sid, and I haven't had a single blackout for more than one week. It could still be a coincidence since the problem is completely random, but that would be a huge one...
Alternatively, you can try Dave's drm-radeon-testing tree as it has some pll patches: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/airlied/drm-2.6.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/drm-radeon-testing
