Nope, there was a whole bunch of crud in /usr/X11R6 not owned by any
package dating back to 2000.
Nuked it all, and I'm able to start up the X server.
Perhaps the package upgrade scripts could warn about files in /usr/X11R6
(or, a simpler test - for /usr/X11R6/* in /etc/ld.so.conf?)
