Could you mount debugfs with 'mount -t debugfs none /sys/kernel/debug',
and when the hang happens, capture the
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file (when running on the newer
kernel)?

With X stopped, 'echo 0 > /sys/class/vtconsole/vtcon1/bind; rmmod i915'
should work (assuming vtcon1 is the one with name = 'frame buffer
device').
