It said firmware-linux, not firmware-linux-free.

In xorg.conf, something like:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "r128"
        Driver "r128"
        Option "NoAccel"
EndSection

(the r128 driver doesn't seem to have an option to keep 2d acceleration
but not dri.)
