Nothing in the logs, can still remote ssh on. Remote restarting gdm has no effect on the screen neither do the hot keys to switch to the text terminal.
I realised that there was a newer kernel 2.6.32-4-amd64 so I upgradedI now get errors before xserver restarts, sometimes just an app dies but mostly x restarts:
