Bug#605961: xserver-xorg-video-intel: kms prevents X starting on Idealpad U350 unless booted in single-user mode

Subject: xserver-xorg-video-intel: kms prevents X starting on Idealpad U350 unless booted in single-user mode
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.13.0-2
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Having upgraded this machine (Lenovo Ipeapad U350) to current squeeze
(including 2:2.13.0-2 intel driver and thus kms), it fails to start X
(just gave a flashing underscore in top-left corner). One cannot get
to a VT either (holding down ctrl-alt-F1 shows the logoin promt
faintly but clearly the attemt to switch is being imediately switched
back). It does not timeout back to control after 20 mins, so this is a
serious problem for the user. If ssh is not installed then only
ctrl-alt-del (twice) will do anything.

Strangely, if I start in single user '(recovery mode)' and just hit
ctrl-D to continue booting then X comes up fine. I have included logs
and details from these two boots below to try and disgnose why.

The non-booting case details gathered using ssh from another machine.

Examining the /var/log/Xorg.0.log files I find that in the non-booting
case it fails to open /dev/fb0 (rather than the /dev/dri/card0 used in
the working case) and gives up. I wonder if the i915 module simply
isn't getting loaded?

Looking at the DMESG info it shows that in the non-booting case
inteldrmfb is not getting loaded. What is responsible for making this
happen? I don't understand why this happens in single-user mode but
not normally.

Looking at the modules loaded and dmesg outputs it seems that the
problem is that the i915 driver doesn't load in a normal boot. If I
try to load it manually I get errors for each of i2c_core, i2c_algo,
drm and i915 saying 'No such Device'. Even though drm is already
loaded fine. Also when it works the screen mode changes during the
boot to much higher res before the line 'Console: switching to colour
frame buffer device'. These seem like clues. There must be something
happening during normal boot which prevents i915 from loading, but
whatever it is doesn;t happen if the boot goes via single-user mode?

This bug has the same effect as 601558, but is different
hardware (GM45), and it can apparently work with the 2.6.32-26
standard kernel (unlike that bug) - so I've filed a separate bug.

Feel free to merge them if they are deemed equivalent. I tried the
2.6.35 kernel in squeeze but that oopses early in the boot and thus
is no use at all.

Information from non-boting (normal boot) case
