BTW, I found a way out of the black screen when using QEMU/KVM: If I
switch to text mode while in the SDL fullscreen session (e.g. by
pressing ctrl-alt-1 to switch to the "serial0" console), and then switch
out of fullscreen again, the black screen is gone and the X server can
be used again.
