Bug#601478: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Enabling KMS causes intermitted flickering

What's next - would you like me to file an upstream bug?

Yes please, giving me the URL or bug number so that I can link both
reports.

After trying experimental xorg (no working intel driver package - boohoo), purging all of xorg and reinstalling the Testing versions it all started working. Since I wasn't going to give up that easily I hacked and hacked until I got it flickering again :-) and finally figured out what was wrong with my setup:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Configured Screen"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        DefaultDepth 16
EndSection

It seems that xserver-xorg-video-intel with KMS enabled just doesn't work right with 16-bit colors. By changing the above to "24" and restarting X it all started working beautifully.

Upstream bug for sure, and one that only affects us old beards who just *KNOW* that 16-bit colors work twice as fast as 24-bit colors (with it's newfangled four bytes per pixel).

*cough*

:-D

I think the Debian bug can be closed now.
