After testing for a couple of weeks with the Vesa/OpenChrome drivers and various recommended /etc/X11/xorg.conf settings I can confirm that I am still experiencing the random X/Gnome lockups. My only option now is to switch to another GPU/IGP other than Via and OpenChrome for a stable system. Thanks Ibaidul
