Appending "video=1280x1024" is necessary to get that mode on the console; 1024x768 is used by default. If remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the problem remains, though the log (attached) is a bit different. $ cat /sys/class/drm/card0-VGA-1/edid | wc -c 0Hrmpf. What's that for a broken monitor that does not supply EDID information? Can you obtain it with get-edid (in the read-edid package) instead?

Your previous mail suggests that your monitor is an LG L1715S
That's right, I use this model. -- Jakub Wilk
