On June 13th I upgraded my "squeeze" system and got new kernel
and new version of xserver-xorg-video-radeon. After the reboot
my VGA monitor got really bright. I use a monitor attached to
my laptop's VGA output, extending laptop screen.
My video card is a RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10].
Searching around I found out bug reports at Freedesktop and
Launchpad:

I tried the recommendation of comment 15 on bug 27478 and it
indeed seem to fix the problem, the command is below.
radeontool regset DAC_MACRO_CNTL 0x00000808
I didn't saw something similar on Debian BTS and the bug seems
rather new (from April/May) but already fixed upstream. I hope
this works as a form of documentation for other users (and that
it could get patched for squeeze).
