Bug#573371: rationale for switching to /usr/share/xserver-xorg/videodrvdep ?

I perfectly agree that constantly breaking and conflicting is a PITA.
However, I fail to see the reason for switching the ABI and server versions from
/usr/share/xserver-xorg/serverminver and /usr/share/xserver-xorg/videoabiver
to /usr/share/xserver-xorg/videodrvdep. This simply sounds like reinventing
the wheel to no benefit.
