Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.4+4 Severity: normal After upgrading from Xorg 1.4.2 to 1.6.3, when I started X with startx, both keyboard and mouse were nonfunctional. After googling, I added the line Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off" to the ServerLayout section of xorg.conf, and everything worked again. But presumably the packing system should provide a more graceful upgrade. The point of this bug report is to document a failure. Attached are: Xorg.log for the failed case. xorg.conf after I added the above line. Xorg.log for a working system. >From what I've read, this problem has something to do with the HAL daemon. It is installed and it is running: ps -ef|grep hal 124 3019 1 0 20:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/hald root 3020 3019 0 20:36 ? 00:00:00 hald-runner root 3059 3020 0 20:36 ? 00:00:00 hald-addon-usb-csr: listening on 'Mouse Receiver' root 3088 3020 0 20:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-cpufreq 124 3089 3020 0 20:36 ? 00:00:00 hald-addon-acpi: listening on acpi kernel interface /proc/acpi/event jrv 28978 25537 0 21:56 ? 00:00:00 /bin/bash -c ps -ef|grep hal jrv 28980 28978 0 21:56 ? 00:00:00 grep hal BTW I note the Xorg 1.5.2 log quoted here https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+question/51448 includes this helpful comment: (II) Cannot locate a core pointer device. (II) Cannot locate a core keyboard device. (II) The server relies on HAL to provide the list of input devices. If no devices become available, reconfigure HAL or disable AllowEmptyInput. This comment doesn't appear in my logs. I don't know whether it's an Ubuntu addition, or was included in the 1.5 sources but dropped from 1.6, but it would be nice if it were restored. Let me know if there's anything else you would like to see. I hope this helps. - Jim Van Zandt -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'oldstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30 (SMP w/4 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages xserver-xorg depends on: ii console-setup 1.44 console font and keymap setup prog ii hal 0.5.13-3 Hardware Abstraction Layer ii libc6 2.9-25 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii x11-xkb-utils 7.4+3 X11 XKB utilities ii xkb-data 1.6-1 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.6.3-1+b1 Xorg X server - core server ii xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.4+4 the X.Org X server -- input driver ii xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.2.5-1 X.Org X server -- evdev input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-kbd [ 1:1.3.2-3 X.Org X server -- keyboard input d ii xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1:1.4.0-2 X.Org X server -- mouse input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-synap 1.1.2-1 Synaptics TouchPad driver for X.Or ii xserver-xorg-input-wacom 0.8.3.2-1 X.Org X server -- Wacom input driv ii xserver-xorg-video-apm [ 1:1.2.1-2 X.Org X server -- APM display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ark [ 1:0.7.1-2 X.Org X server -- ark display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-chips 1:1.2.1-3 X.Org X server -- Chips display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-cirru 1:1.3.1-1 X.Org X server -- Cirrus display d ii xserver-xorg-video-dummy 1:0.3.1-2 X.Org X server -- dummy display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-fbdev 1:0.4.0-4 X.Org X server -- fbdev display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-glint 1:1.2.3-1 X.Org X server -- Glint display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-i128 1:1.3.2-1 X.Org X server -- i128 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i740 1:1.3.0-1 X.Org X server -- i740 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.8.0-2 X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx ii xserver-xorg-video-mach6 6.8.2-1 X.Org X server -- ATI Mach64 displ ii xserver-xorg-video-mga [ 1:1.4.11.dfsg-1 X.Org X server -- MGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-neoma 1:1.2.3-1 X.Org X server -- Neomagic display ii xserver-xorg-video-nv [x 1:2.1.14-2 X.Org X server -- NV display drive ii xserver-xorg-video-r128 6.8.1-1 X.Org X server -- ATI r128 display ii xserver-xorg-video-radeo 1:6.12.2-3 X.Org X server -- ATI Radeon displ ii xserver-xorg-video-radeo 1.2.5-1 X.Org X server -- AMD/ATI r5xx, r6 ii xserver-xorg-video-rendi 1:4.2.1-1 X.Org X server -- Rendition displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3 [x 1:0.6.2-1 X.Org X server -- legacy S3 displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3vir 1:1.10.2-2 X.Org X server -- S3 ViRGE display ii xserver-xorg-video-savag 1:2.3.0-1 X.Org X server -- Savage display d ii xserver-xorg-video-silic 1:1.7.2-1 X.Org X server -- SiliconMotion di ii xserver-xorg-video-sis [ 1:0.10.1-2 X.Org X server -- SiS display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-sisus 1:0.9.1-1 X.Org X server -- SiS USB display ii xserver-xorg-video-tdfx 1:1.4.1-1 X.Org X server -- tdfx display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-tga [ 1:1.2.0-1 X.Org X server -- TGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-tride 1:1.3.1-1 X.Org X server -- Trident display ii xserver-xorg-video-tseng 1:1.2.1-1 X.Org X server -- Tseng display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-v4l [ 0.2.0-3 X.Org X server -- Video 4 Linux di ii xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1:2.2.1-1 X.Org X server -- VESA display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-vmwar 1:10.16.7-1 X.Org X server -- VMware display d ii xserver-xorg-video-voodo 1:1.2.2-1 X.Org X server -- Voodoo display d Versions of packages xserver-xorg recommends: ii libgl1-mesa-dri 7.5-3 A free implementation of the OpenG ii udev 0.141-2 /dev/ and hotplug management daemo xserver-xorg suggests no packages. -- no debconf informationX.Org X Server 1.6.3 Release Date: 2009-7-31 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.30.4-dsa-ia32 i686 Debian Current Operating System: Linux vanzandt 2.6.30 #12 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 20 22:07:50 EDT 2009 i686 Build Date: 06 August 2009 04:49:57PM xorg-server 2:1.6.3-1+b1 (buildd@murphy.debian.org) Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version.
