Bug#577839: tapping makes mouse jump

Package: xserver-xorg-input-evdev
Version: 1:2.3.2-5

Machine is a Dell Inspiron 4000 (i.e., old laptop). Input devices:
built-in keyboard, track point, touchpad (and the power button and
so on). When I last upgraded the evdev driver, I got a new and
strange symptom. When I downgrade to 1:2.3.2-3 again, symptom is
gone (but I got some seemingly unrelated problem of the keyboard
not working, so back to 2.3.2-5 for me).

The symptom: whenever I tap the touchpad, the pointer quickly
jumps a little in a seemingly random direction.

Using the mouse button or track point, there is no problem. Moving
the pointer after that initial tap is fine --- it is only tapping that
breaks. I would have suspected the synaptics driver, but as I said,
the problem comes or goes according to the evdev driver version.

Ideas?
