Sorry, but no. I tried for all values of X that you suggested, but the
weird artifatcs persisted.

Maybe this has to do with my using of a custom modeline (on a CRT
monitor)? At least I experience mode switches when I switch between X
and VT, which shouldn't happen if KMS worked as expected, right?
