This is not a regression. By default your X server tries depth 24. This
is from your log:

I've added the 24-bit colour depth support to s3 driver starting version
0.6.1. For 0.6.0 version you need to set the DefaultDepth to 16 (man
xorg.conf) in "Screen" section of xorg.conf. Please, try this and report
the results. As an option, you can backport the driver from testing.
