Ahh, okay my mirror was be stale so I changed apt sources to point to 
debian.org repository, upgraded to the latest version of xserver-xorg-
core (1.7.4-2) plus related packages and it all works just fine now.

Note to self: When in doubt, update from primary repository before 
submitting a bug report. ;-)
