the diff from 1.7.3.902 to 1.7.4 is quite small[0], and I can't see
anything in it that would explain this.  Are you sure this didn't happen
with 1.7.3.902?  Is the machine still reachable over the network when
this happens?  Do you have an X log from 1.7.4?
