Interesting observation. I can confirm that I see the problem with the extra
blank space and the failure to update (that is, "xclock -d -update 1" doesn't
actually update unless the clock is obscured and revealed) when my LC_*
environment variables are:
LC_MESSAGES=C
LC_NUMERIC=C
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=C
but not if I unset LC_TIME and leave the others as they are.
