I am now able to state more precisely the problem and in which cases it occurs: Jonas Diemer posted a python-script [1] on the Ubuntu-Bug-Tracker which reproduces ONE of the bugs, causing a freeze. The script does NOT reproduce the bug for kernel versions 2.6.29 and 2.6.31- rc5. Kernel versions in between may have reintroduced the bug and it is reliably reproducible with the 2.6.28-kernel delivered with Ubuntu Jaunty. However there seems to be at least one other bug which causes freezes with all kernel versions stated above and the same setup which is not reproducible by the script. These Bug(s) happen quite rare (approx. between 1/day and 1/week) on my system. I could not determine special circumstances (like which programs) lead to the bug.
