Adding:
Driver "vesa"
to the Device section makes X start, so it's definitely a bug in the intel
driver.
Also, I'm using an ancient kernel (2.6.29) because of problems in KDE (it's
too slow with >=.30), but I verified the bug happens with .29, .31, .32-trunk,
both with sid and experimental versions of xserver-xorg-video-intel , and
related components.
I'm installing -dbg packages, and after reading
