Screen 0 is a Nokia Multigraph 447Xpro that supports DDC and screen 1 is a Hewlett-Packard A1097C that doesn't. I originally configured screen 1 with 24-bit color but inadvertently left screen 0 at 24-bit color. Everything worked just fine, except when I switched to a different virtual terminal and back, the colors of screen 0 became severely dimmed, so that it was hard to read anything. Screen 1 was OK. Stopping and restarting the X server restored the intensity of screen 0 until the next VT switch. I think logging out (back to xdm) also did, but that one I am not sure about. A full-screen SDL game that switched the screen resolution had the same effect as switching VTs. When peeking at the visuals with xdpyinfo, I noticed that I wasn't using as many colors on screen 0 as I could, and I changed the depth to 24 and restarted xdm. The dimming problem was cured. So, I no longer suffer from this bug, but surely there must be something wrong with the driver that makes it handle this combination incorrectly; the hardware must be capable of it as everything looked OK until the VT switch. I'm closing my bug report because AFAICT the mga driver no longer supports multiple X11 screens (although it supports multiple monitors) and the bug with different color depths on different screens is thus no longer reproducible. The kernel-mode busy loop also mentioned in this report is a separate issue. I suspect it may be temperature related (happening more often if the computer is cold). Anyway, I'll file a separate bug for it if I can get a backtrace with current Linux. That bug would go in linux-2.6, I suppose.Attachment: pgpQq3tKWe6mI.pgp
