Thanks for the help with this.  The first lshal only lists the USB
receiver as input device, whereas the rebooted one has a number of
additional devices (including the machine's keyboard).  So I'm going to
reassign this to hal (the bug may be further down the stack, but at
least it seems not to be in X).
