Bug#549085: xserver-xorg-video-intel: X server crashes with SDL application when no window manager is running

On Wed, Sep 30, 2009 at 22:49, Julien Cristau <jcristau@debian.org> wrote:
#548716 was introduced in 1.6.4.  So you can downgrade to 1.6.3.901 and
get a log from that.  Or a backtrace from the crash in gdb.

Reproduced with 1.6.3.901, but with different crash, and different behavior. Odd, I'd swear there were crashes before with similar backtrace. The backtrace in original post is probably related to #548716, then. Meh, anyways.

1. Running xterm as first client. Terminating xterm normally by typing exit causes a screen blank, but apparently no definite and final crash.
2. Running xterm as first client. Pressing ctrl+c causes crash. Attached log "Xorg.1.log". Reproduced several times.
3. Running abuse.sdl as first client. Immediate crash. Attached log "Xorg.1.log.SDL". Did not reproduce in a later attempt.

That means the original bug report still applies: running **SDL** application as first client can cause crash of the server. No backtrace, but the server can shut down.

Oddest thing is now I am not reproducing this 100%. There are odd flickers and freezes when messing with the first X client. The hack I did in my display manager (XOpenDisplay() just after the server starts and prior to initializing SDL) is still valid and still eliminates this flicker, freezes and self-restarts of the server (as in, screen goes dark, then restores, but the client has disappeared).

Meh. Julien, it might have really been a bug in -intel before 2.9.0, and I just happened to do the upgrade of X.org at the same time when there was a very similar issue in the core. Who knows. Perhaps the attached logs will still shed some light to someone about what's happening.

Here's another interesting chunk of the output:

Dropping master
error setting MTRR (base = 0xc0000000, size = 0x10000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)
(EE) intel(0): Failed to initialize kernel memory manager

Just throwing potentially related info, the above appeared only when I disabled the XOpenDisplay() hack - perhaps this causes the annoying flicker.

I wanted to try this before going to sleep, so this post may be a bit messy. No energy to tidy it up. So, good night! Can't wait for 1.6.5.
