Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
Version: 1:2.1.10-1
Severity: normal

I got a complete machine crash when shutting down KDE, when kdm should have
showed. I was able to reproduce this every time I tried on this install. I'm
able to reproduce on other lenny installs on the same machine. I'm able to
reproduce with all versions supporting my card I tried, going back as far as
2.1.3. The machine stops responding to pings. Ctrl+Alt+Del (or maybe pressing
some other keys) can cause the machine to reboot after a few seconds. This
also happens with GNOME instead of KDE and xdm instead of kdm. This does not
happen when not using a display manager.

I was unable to reproduce with other GNU/Linux distributions. I tried Mandriva
Linux, Fedora and PCLinuxOS, using versions 2.1.8 and 2.1.10. I'm therefore
not sure that this is an upstream bug, but it does look like
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15238
I didn't feel like installing Slackware to try reproducing though. The only
difference is that the screen is different. I get a mostly black screen
except for 2 incomplete lines with text characters. At least one of those
lines flashes.

This machine uses VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M
GT (rev a1). This uses the NB8P chipset. I was unable to reproduce on 1 other
machine I tried, although the card is very different (GeForce 4). I have no
similar card to try reproducing. I was unable to reproduce with the vesa and
nvidia drivers.

thanks

I take back my previous message. I retested this on the same machine, with an install dating from just before lenny was released. The results with that install aren't the same as those I originally described. Xorg just hangs as described by Bill, so the machine replies to pings and can be recovered via SSH. I don't know if the bug I first experienced simply hid this one, or if it was partially fixed, but I'm just going to retitle the bug pretending the bug evolved.

Furthermore, this problem disappears after the recent X upgrade in squeeze. Updating xserver-xorg, xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-video-nv and x11-common fixes the problem. Since the video ABI changed, I'm not sure the bug was in nv, but I'll simply mark this as fixed in nv 2.1.14-2.

nv works fine now.
