Bug#528709: Problem Solved

I finally figured out what the problem was. If I completely remove any reference to synaptics from my xorg.conf then synclient and syndaemon work as documented. Apparently it is not a good idea to have configuration done both by xorg.conf and by HAL.

I had the same setup in xorg.conf for several years, but apparently the latest version of the synaptics driver prefers to be configured via HAL. This is not well-documented in the README or NEWS files. There is a brief mention of auto-configuration and HAL in README.Debian but then it goes on to describe manual configuration using xorg.conf, which is seemingly not the proper method now.

So the fix was as follows. I removed all references to the synaptics driver from my xorg.conf, then restarted X. At that point I could use synclient to configure the touchpad as documented in the man page. To make my settings permanent, I copied the default fdi file from:

/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/11-x11-synaptics.fdi

to:

/etc/hal/fdi/11-x11-synaptics.fdi

Then I edited that file to set my configuration variables. After restarting HAL and X everything worked as it is supposed to.
