I've found this in kdm.log (final line of the logged sessions):
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
/usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so:
undefined symbol: atiddxAbiDixLookupPrivate

I've found other lines. These log output were produced after X upgrade but
before the complete system upgrade (hal upgrade):
-------------------------------------------------------------------
libhal.c 1399 : wrong reply from hald. Expecting an array.
(EE) module ABI major version (4) doesn't match the server's version (2)
(EE) Failed to load module "evdev" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(EE) No input driver matching `evdev'
