OK, done some more testing. vesa from unstable only gives me 800x600 or 640x480
but only if /etc/Xorg/xorg.conf is configured for Driver "vesa" manually. The same
setting (or no mention of a driver at all) using the packages in testing gives me my
more familiar 1024x768.

This is not a solution, it's simply downgrading the entire Xorg system to the
version in testing. It would be a lot better if the nv driver could support my
nv chipset.

I have also verified that I was wrong about vga - the vesa package from testing
is the only one that is now installed and the vesa package in unstable works but
at a resolution that is unusable for real work.

What are the chances of genuine 'nv' support?
