Bug#523972: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: Unable to set up dual-monitor layout with Mobility Radeon X700 and randr

Upon logging into X the display on an external monitor connected to VGA-0 defaults to a
clone of the laptop's internal panel. While at the gdm screen, the display is mapped across
both monitors, with the external monitor at the resolution set by PreferredMode in 
xorg.conf.

Running 

xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode NNxNN --right-of LVDS

for any mode higher than the laptop's native panel resolution gives a 'mode not
found' error despite these modes being used on the gdm screen before login.

xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1024x768 --right-of LVDS

produces the expected result as it is a lower resolutiont than LVDS's 1280x800.
However, any further invocation of randr, such as opening the GNOME display
applet (which reports only one connected monitor) or running xrandr --verbose will 
switch the external monitor back to cloned mode. Any further efforts to set VGA-0's 
modes have no noticeable effect, although xrandr does report that the modes have 
been changed.

Sometimes, switching to a virtual console and back to X will result in the external
monitor leaving clone mode, but again any further randr invocation switches back.

Despite xrandr claiming a virtual screen size of 2304 x 800 and a VGA-0 horizontal
offset of 1280, the display is still showing in cloned mode. Also, VGA-0 is not
listing any of its native modes. For reference, VGA-0 is an LG Studioworks E900B
monitor. The fglrx driver is able to generate a full list of modes from its EDID.

With fglrx (and indeed with the OSS drivers in the pre-randr MergedFB era) dual-screen
worked pretty well with this card. I'd like to help find out why it isn't working now,
especially since AMD may soon drop support for it from the closed-source drivers.
My 'help' is limited to following simple instructions and reporting the results.

I'd be willing to upgrade to sid/experimental if there's any indication that newer
packages might help resolve the problems.
