after upgrading to xserver 7.4 tapping and scrolling are not working anymore.
a lot of other packages were updated in this batch so i cannot say the problem is really here.

This was disabled by default upstream. See http://who-t.blogspot.com/2009/04/synaptics-11-and-what-your-touchpad-can.html for more info. You should be able to enable it if you wish by adding the 'Option "TouchpadOff" "2"' line to your xorg.conf's input device section. You can see the synaptics manpage for more detail.
