Ok. I remember seeing xdm not start X correctly, but I think it was
somehow-related to the previous session not ending correctly, and maybe
the pid file not being cleaned up or so. If you switch back from kdm to
xdm, reboot, let xdm fail, and run /etc/init.d/xdm restart. Does it say
anything about while it fails?
