Bug#507626: unknown event or program causes xorg to lock up and flash herringbone pattern

when playing gnome-mahjongg, the screen went momentarily black. after
pressing a key, the xserver 'herringbone' flashed on the screen along
with a nearly fullscreen "x" logo (the classic split x logo). afterward,
the xserver was accepting input events less and less, until it stopped
responding to keyboard and mouse events altogether - note that the x
pointer was still moveable. had to use the sysrq key to sync and reboot.
desktop is fluxbox with gnome-settings-daemon running, windows open at
the time were:
gnome-terminal
pidgin
iceweasel
gnome-mahjongg
four dock applets running in the fluxbox slit: wmwave, wmifinfo, wmifs
and wmload
i labeled this 'unknown event or program' because it did it once before
this evening when gnome-mahjongg was not running, thus i am hesitant to
blame it on the game. note however that the other programs listed were running.
on 30nov08 or 01dec08, not sure which, i did an
apt-get upgrade that installed a new version of xserver-xorg-core.
possibly new version of said package causing this problem?
computer is an nec versa vx laptop (p3/500) with 256m ram, video
hardware is driver mach64 running at 1024x768@16bit. one of the ram
sodimms is 6 months old, the other is a month old. internet connection
is wifi 802.11g through ndiswrapper.
