(Debian bug #477197 after FD bug #9763) Quoting Adeodato Simó (dato@net.com.org.es): > * Albert Astals Cid [Mon, 21 Apr 2008 20:18:25 +0200]: > > > The change was introduced at request of someone who is not a Spanish user. xkb > > maintainer is asking for me to do a voting to see if Spanish users prefer > > AltGr+4 to be a "deadkey" ~ or ~ > > I'm Spanish and I think it should be totally be ~ (asciitilde): there is > no character in the Spanish language that would need it as a dead key > (as we have our own dedicated key for 'ñ'). (please read this down to the end) In general, I'm all for standardization when it comes at keymaps. One of the great weaknesses we have in the Linux world is the incredible numbers of variants that are floating around for nearly all keymaps (we have like 4 variants for French and I guess this is probably the same for Spanish). So, I would first buy the argument developed in http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9763 In fact, when it comes at French, our keymap has exactly the same issue: AltGr+2 on French keyboards give dead_tilde on Windows and asciitilde in all Linux keymaps. So, the solution adopted in FreeDesktop's bug 9763 should in theory also be adopted for the French keymap in X. As a conclusion, the conclusion by Peter Punk has a good justification. BUT STILL.....I would strongly recommend against *NOT* applying it and if you change the French keymap this way, you'll get the same number of angry Linux users than you currently have with the change of the Spanish keymap. Moreover, this change is DANGEROUS for our users. For instance, I do not count the number of times I anadvertently typed "rm *" instead of "rm *~" because I was using a Unix shell.....from a Windows machine, just because AtlGr+2 is mapped to ascii_tilde. The very same will happen for longstanding users of the Spanish keymap in X. So, even though I'm all for consistency when it comes at keymaps, here I think consistency *deserves an exception*. Standardization with keymaps used in Windows is good. Adopting weird usage is bad by Windows. What's carved on physical keyboards is "~". It does not say whether this is a deadkey or not.... Please don't turn "~" on a dead key on any X keymap except for those where this is a longstanding established practice (such as Portuguese keymaps).
