Bug#475892: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Locks up with "(EE) intel(0): First SDVO output reported failure to sync"

I'd be game to try upgrading, but it looks like I would have to pull in
a lot of dependencies from sid or experimental. I'm not terribly keen
on switching everything over to unstable, as I was running
testing/stable to try to avoid issues like this one. Since this
stratagem doesn't seem to be paying off, however, I guess it makes sense
to start tracking unstable. I'm not in any shape to deal with a full
upgrade right this moment, but I will add to this bug report if and when
I do upgrade to say if the crashes continue to occur.

You are, of course, right about not actually having upgraded the driver.
I first wrote down a note of this behavior happening on 7 April, so I
would guess that it started a bit prior to then. According to items in
/var/log/apt/ , some packages relating to X changed on 1 April:

libxkbfile1 1:1.0.4-1 was upgraded to 1:1.0.5-1
libxss1 1:1.1.2-1 was upgraded to 1:1.1.3-1
libxv1 1:1.0.3-1 was upgraded to 1:1.0.4-1

Does it seem that any of these could have been a culprit?
