Which package may be damaged?

Hi,

I am sorry to bother you but I seem to have a rather rare problem. A temporary hard disk failure must have damaged one or very few files on /usr or /var. The result is that in Xorg

1. either the mouse pointer is displayed using a damaged pointer (a square of greyish pixels) or not at all (the mouse continues to work fine if you know where it is); this happens in XDM as well as after login (I use fvwm2)

2. if Xorg is killed in any way (<Ctrl><Alt><Backspace>, kill, logout, reboot), the display starts blinking and the operating system crashes

The hard disks have been checked and there are no errors. I have tried

apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg

but after reinstallation the error persists. Short of wiping the hard disk and reinstalling the whole system, what can I do? Which files should I restore from backups or which packages should be purged and reinstalled?

Hoping for any tips,

Axel Stammler
