Sorry, that was another attempt. The command was:

 sudo gdb -p $(pidof X)

The result was the same: not able to get dump.

I've now upgraded libstdc++6 to 4.3.0~rc2-1 and will post debug info if
this upgrade enables me to attach gdb to X at the next crash.
Please let me know if gdb needs to be in sync with some particular
package's version.
