Sorry, cannot reproduce the problem anymore.

Also -8 is not in my cache nor on snapshot.debian.net (looks like they
do not have any recent packages, at least of xorg).

I thought it would be easier to debug on Debian as there seemed to be
both a working version and a broken on but this is apparently more
complex than that - even powercycling the machine does not break the X
server again.

There is a broken log at bug 18426 on bugs.freedesktop.org, although
non-debian.
