Thanks, that was it. I downgraded to 6.9.0-1 lenny and now xvideo works again.

Also downgraded to xserver 1.4.2 and the symptoms are slightly
different but problematic.
Same as before, starting the computer with the external monitor
plugged in will hang the system with a black screen when X starts (not
sure how to debug that).
Start 1: So restart with monitor unplugged, start X, log in. Plug in
monitor. Monitor resolutions are recognized incorrectly by xrandr.
The highest resolution is 1280x1024, when in fact the monitor goes to
1680x1050. (xrandr output attached).
Start 2: Restart X, everything is fine. External monitor goes to 1680
automatically. XRandr outputs the correct values (attached).

I attached the logs from both X starts (start 1 is haywire, start2 is
correct) but I dunno if it helps. Let me know if there's any other
info to provide.. The most annoying thing is the system freeze, but
I don't know what I can do to narrow down the cause.. None of these
problems happen with ati 6.8.0 (and up to some snapshot shortly before
6.9.0 was fine too, unfortunately I don't recall the exact time it
messed up)

Cheers,
Leo
