Bug#496814: xserver-xorg: [sis]xserver error (Caught signal 11): can't load gnome

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+15
Severity: normal

I have a problem with xorg-server:

X starts then gdm starts and a error window is displayed saying "Le
programme de la bannière d'accueil semble être défaillant. Tentative
d'en utiliser un autre".
(It's in french because it's my locale but the string comes from
GNOME.) It tries several times but it's a failure everytime.

I have done a 'dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg' and reboot but
the problem remains.

If I stop gdm (with '/etc/init.d/gdm stop' as root) and use 'startx'
as user, gnome starts but there are severals errors like:
- errors about applet not found or on loading (for 'OAFIID:Deskbar-Applet')
- icons on desktop are not displayed
- keyboard map is completely silly (I doubt a keymap like that exists)

If I install and start with kdm instead of gdm, I have the same
behaviour of the startx method. However, the keyboard mapping seems
to be ok in this case.

I have never used proprietary driver.

It worked well around 15 days ago (with a system up to date). Then,
the computer was shutdown for vacation and I restarted it yesterday
and updated it. And the bug comes too...

The error seems to be like #474504 but the behaviour is not the same.

I don't thing there is a link but I had another problem with GNOME.
The bug is #492733: Trying to open a new session closes the previous
one. I say it only to be complete.
