I have removed the "DisplaySize" statement from /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and removed the -dpi 100 from /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, and the xdm
login screen looks very fine now.

So I guess you can close that bug as non-existent.

Sorry for that fuss. The DisplaySize was originally required to make
some Qt program survive under Etch.
But I just verified, and the Qt program starts fine as well.

Sorry for the fuss. I guess one should let all hardware
rest for a year before starting to operate it ...
