I tried on Monday and today (Wednesday) the git. However nothing works
(even not 1920x1440 or 1280x1024). Screen remains hopelessly black and
goes to sleep mode.
Does git currently work on your computer ?

Just to confirm, I am proceeding as follows:
   # aptitude build-dep xserver-xorg-video-ati
   $ git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati
   $ cd xf86-video-ati/
   $ ./autogen.sh
   $ make
   # make install prefix=/usr
   then restarting X with ctrl-alt-backspace
