This turned out to be a bug in the synaptics driver.  See the thread
entitled 'linux-next: Tree for July 30' on lkml.  The kernel will
probably work around it, but in any case I just pushed the patch from
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.input/5447 to the
upstream synaptics repo.
