Today I upgraded my lenny install with the latest and had to reboot (for other
reasons), but when I tried to login to my normal account I, it returned
me fairly quickly to the login screen. Quick research showed that
session startup could not open the display. I use WindowMaker and this
is the error it gives in .xsession-errors

Xsession: X session started for jeff at Thu Jul 10 15:13:42 EDT 2008
 Protocol not supported by server
 xrdb: Can't open display ':0'

 Protocol not supported by server
/usr/lib/WindowMaker/WindowMaker fatal error: could not open display ":0"

This doesn't seem to be the same problem as #489141. Are you using xdm?
If so, does 'xauth list :0' output any XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 token?

Yes, I am using xdm.

jeff@naro:/home/jeff[888] ps -lC xdm
F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN TTY TIME CMD
1 S 0 6897 1 0 80 0 - 1942 rt_sig ? 00:00:00 xdm
1 S 0 6954 6897 0 80 0 - 2525 wait ? 00:00:00 xdm

The below is what the xauth cmd outputs:

jeff@naro:/home/jeff[889] xauth list :0
naro/unix:0 XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 87996019a0c3913200ae683007fdea25
